“Velindre gave us an extra two and half years with Mum”: Ffion Ryall’s Story
Velindre will always hold a special place in my heart for the love, care, hope and dignity they gave my mum and our family.
Ffion Ryall will be taking part in our Show Cancer the V fun run on 19th July. In her own words, Ffion bravely opens up about what inspired her to take part and the very special person she will be running for.
When I found out my mum, Liz, had been diagnosed with bowel cancer, my whole world fell apart. I was scared of the journey ahead and terrified by the prospect of losing her. I was only 18 and still desperately needed my mum.
Then we met the absolute angels who work at Velindre. They were warm, kind and caring, and they made not only my mum feel at ease, but our whole family too. Whether it was appointments, treatments or simply answering our questions, they supported us every step of the way.
Sadly, there was no happy ending. My mum passed away at Velindre on 31st July 2015.

The care she received during her last seven days was exceptional. There were facilities that allowed us to be with her at all times. The staff constantly checked in on us, and even the canteen team noticed we were turning up for breakfast every morning. They quickly realised what was happening and quietly took care of us too.
There is something so special about Velindre. Despite being a hospital for cancer patients, it has a feeling about it that makes you feel safe, reassured and hopeful. Velindre will always hold a special place in my heart for the love, care, hope and dignity they gave my mum and our family.
I have to admit, I am not a runner. Over the years I’ve seen countless fundraising runs, including many for Velindre, and although I’ve always admired the people taking part, I never thought it was something I could do. Quite simply, I didn’t think I could run.
Then I saw that the Show Cancer the V charity run was being held on my mum’s birthday – 19th July.
It felt like a sign from her. As if she was saying, “Go on, Ffi. You can do it.” So I signed up.
Losing my mum was the hardest thing I have ever experienced. But I am so grateful for the time we had together and for the memories we made. We laughed together, cried together, and had the chance to say the things that mattered.
Velindre gave us an extra two and half years with, and for that I will be forever grateful.
I know every pound raised will go towards helping families like mine, providing care, comfort and hope during the most difficult times imaginable. While my mum is no longer here, I hope the money raised will help Velindre continue their incredible work and give other families more precious time together.
Taking part is my way of saying thank you, honouring my mum’s strength, and helping to ensure others receive the same compassion and support when they need it most.
Every donation, no matter the size, will make a difference and help Velindre continue the amazing work they do for people affected by cancer.
Thank you to everyone who has supported me, donated, encouraged me and cheered me on throughout this journey. Of course, there will be birthday cake at the finish line! Mum wouldn’t have it any other way. This is for you, Mum!
We’d like to say a huge thank you to Ffion for sharing her story with us, and for choosing to take part in Show Cancer the V.
