Wear Red 2024 raised a record-breaking £80,000 for Velindre!

On Friday 2nd February, our annual Wear Red for Wales and Velindre campaign returned, and thanks to you it was the biggest and best year yet! This year raised an record-breaking £80,000 for Velindre. We want to thank every single one of you who joined us in Wearing Red and showing your support for our international rugby teams and Velindre!

From being established back in 2017, Wear Red has become one of our flagship events at Velindre. We are so grateful to see the number of people getting involved and the amount raised continue to grow year-on-year. Your support means so much to us!

This year was no different, it was fantastic to see all of our lovely supporters participate in their own way! From schools and businesses wearing red and donating £1 to red bake sales and quizzes, every one of you contributed to raising awareness and essential funds.

Here are some of our key fundraising highlights from Wear Red 2024!

Rhod Gilbert was once again the face of this year’s campaign, sharing his incredible stories with listeners of Nation Radio and sharing what Velindre means to him.

This year’s Wear Red was extra memorable since we were joined by leading Welsh pastry baker, Peter’s, who transformed from green to red and changed the colour of their packaging for the first time since their founding in 1970.
From February 2 to March 31, Peter’s proudly wore the colour as they unveiled new red packaging for their products.

We also celebrated Wear Red at the cancer centre as we were extremely fortunate to be joined on the day by Liam Reardon, winner of Love Island 2021. The Wear Red day began with a workout at Inspire Gym in Merthyr Tydfil. Liam joined the 6am group in their Wear Red t-shirts and carried out their Velindre-themed workout; it was the perfect way to start the day!
Liam later joined us at the cancer centre and interacted with patients and staff, brightening many people’s days and truly making a difference.

Sugar Rogue gym in Cwmbran completed 24 hyrox workouts in 24 hours challenge and raised a staggering £13,599.44 for Wear Red 2024! They had an incredible turnout with many individuals getting involved for both physically and mentally challenging event. Sugar Rogue have supported the Wear Red For Wales And Velindre campaign for several years, inspired by Velindre Ambassador and gym member Gareth Way, and we are beyond grateful for their continued energy, hard work and dedication to making a difference to cancer patients and families in Wales.

Every year, the pupils from Blenheim Road and Coed Eva Primary Schools study a topic and as part of that they will raise money for a related charity. This year, the children chose Velindre as their selected charity and part took in Wear Red 2024. In their day full of fundraising, they each took part in multiple activities including a danceathon, ball skills and board games and a total of £6,577.07 was raised!

The funds raised by Wear Red campaign make a huge difference here at Velindre. Your fundraising from Wear Red funds a wide range of roles and projects across the cancer centre and beyond.

SAVE THE DATE:  We are delighted to announce that Wear Red 2025 will be back on Friday 31st January 2025!
