Leading Velindre Consultant joins his patient on the Wales Coastal Path Challenge

Velindre’s own Professor Tom Crosby is taking part in the Wales Coastal Path Challenge in support of lung cancer patient and friend Craig Maxwell and the future of cancer treatments in Wales.

In a bid to raise £1 million Craig Maxwell and Velindre have launched this latest fundraising challenge – the Wales Coastal Path Cancer Challenge. From the 14th of February to the 10th of March 2024, the 26-day challenge will see people from across Wales walk 780 miles of the coast path, to represent the 78 days it took him to receive his diagnosis from the point of finding his tumour. It is being done in 26 days to mirror the QuicDNA project, a genomics research project to reduce diagnosis time for lung cancer patients to a maximum of 26 days. A rugby match ball will be relayed the entire distance of the challenge, symbolising Wales’ collective fight against cancer and it will culminate at the national stadium of Wales, the Principality Stadium, on 10th March for the Wales vs. France Guinness Six Nations match, where Craig accompanied by his children, Isla and Zach, will carry the match ball onto the pitch.

It’s not too late to sign up to join Craig on a day of this walk!

Acknowledging the unpredictable nature of his ongoing treatments, Craig will be joined by a different Welsh celebrity every day of the walk, so that regardless of his ability to walk, he will have a representative to take on the challenge, but he is doing amazingly well so far.

Professor Tom Crosby has signed up to 4 days of the walk and will be completing over 100 miles of the coastal path with a target of raising £1,000 towards Craig’s fundraising target!

Professor Tom Crosby says:

“I am delighted to be taking part in this challenge. As difficult as it might me, it is nothing compared to the challenges that Craig and other patients go through.

Craig is one of the most inspirational patients I have met and is determined to improve the experience and outcomes of cancer patients in the future.

He has already raised in excess of £1 million for this cause which is helping to fund the QuicDNA Lung Cancer study.

The money raised will all go to supporting earlier detection of cancer and faster diagnosis, especially using blood tests rather than more invasive tissue biopsies.

Please give what you can so we can give others what they need.“
