Judy Runs Boston MArathon, Completing Her Abbot World Marathon Majors

Dedicated supporter and Metropole Mad Dasher, Judy made the amazing achievement of running the Boston marathon on 15th April 2019 in support of Velindre. This achievement is even more impressive because it was her final marathon of the The Abbott World Marathon Majors, a series consisting of six of the largest and most renowned marathons in the world.

Before running the Boston Marathon, Judy wrote inspiring words on approaching the completion of her Marathon Majors and the reason why she had chosen to support Velindre:

“April 15th, I will be running in the Boston Marathon. This will be my final of the 6 Marathon Majors. My husband Justin will be running with me (he completed his 6 last year) and this year we have been raising money for Velindre Cancer Centre, where a very dear friend and work colleague Adelle Davies, has been receiving treatment. We have taken part in several events throughout the year. We started on 9th June 2018 with Man V Horse when myself Justin and David Davies (husband of Adelle) entered a relay team. We will be completing our year of “mad dashing” in June when we will take part in Man V Horse.

The Abbott World Marathon Majors is a series consisting of six of the largest and most renowned marathons in the world. The races take place in Tokyo, Boston,London, Berlin, Chicago and New York City.

New York City Marathon completed on 01/11/2015

BMW Berlin Marathon 25/09/2016

Virgin London Marathon 24/04/2016

Bank of America Chicago Marathon 08/10/2017

Tokyo Marathon 25/02/1018

………..and finally Boston on 15/04/2019.

I have learnt so much about running marathons during my quest to get my hands on the Abotts medal which has all 6 marathons included on it.

26.2 miles requires training both physically and mentally. No matter how prepared you think you are it doesn’t always go to plan. Training not only involves (this time 18weeks) tempo runs, speed runs, long runs, easy runs, core and strength training but also finding a nutrition and hydration that works for you. Fingers crossed I have at last worked mine out however, this will also be dependent on the weather on the day. The last 6 miles is when the mental training comes on and on ……

My training has gone reasonably well up until 3 weeks ago when the dreaded shin splints developed. All is not lost as I am very pleased I decided to stop running and maintain my fitness by cycling and gym which will hopefully enable me to get to the finish line!!!!!

To cross that finish line in Boston will be a dream come true and there will be buckets of tears that I can guarantee.”

We’re so pleased for Judy and we’re incredibly grateful to her and her fellow Metropole Mad Dashers at the Metropole Hotel. Their fundraising has now reached a fantastic £4000 and we can’t wait to see what else is in store.

Thank you for your ongoing support and dedication.
