Here’s what some of our supporters and fundraisers say:
36-year old Kellie Collins organised for her and a group of friends to do the UK’s 3 Peaks Challenge and is also running the Cardiff Half Marathon for Velindre: "The amazing staff at Velindre cared for and supported my Mum until she passed away from breast cancer. That was over 25 years ago and since then the centre has provided the same for many of my friends & family. Fundraising is our way of saying thank you to all of the dedicated staff past and present, and to help make sure that anyone touched by cancer will continue to benefit from the Velindre centre."
36-year old Sarah Miles from Blackwood organised a pink event, pictured below, to raise funds for Breast Cancer: "April 2011 marked year since my diagnosis of Breast cancer and I wanted to mark the occasion with a celebration to thank the friends and family that had supported me through the past year. Even though my grandmother and mother had both been diagnosed in their 50’s and 60’s I never imagined that at 36 I would suffer the same fate. I wanted to support Velindre as I received my treatment there, as did my Nan back in the 1960’s. It has helped so many people in and around South Wales that I just wanted to give something back to those that had treated me. The staff at Valindre are fantastic and I hope that my little contribution will help towards treatment of fellow Breast Cancer suffers."
55-year old Wendy Jordan organised a sponsored walk from Barry to Sully following treatment for ovarian cancer for Velindre: “I feared the hospital and thought I couldn’t go there, but the staff were unbelievable. They treat you like you are special and I want to give something back for all the help they gave me, now I’m on my feet and in remission.”
52-year old Janet Morgan took part in our trek to Machu Picchu in May this year and said of the experience: "Trekking in Peru has been the most memorable experience I've ever had; the magnificent landscapes were breathtaking like nothing I've ever seen before. The view when we reached the pass was stunning - the whole group was quite emotional as it had been a real test of strength and character to get to the top. Since I have returned people have asked if we reached the top of Machu Picchu - it wasn't about reaching Machu Picchu but about the whole experience of being with a group of wonderful people who all wanted to walk together gaining some wonderful experiences along the way."
