Complementary Therapies

Following illnesses or stress, people will very often be left in a state of imbalance, short of vital energy which can prevent the body and all its complex individual systems from functioning effectively.

Complementary Therapies can help to restore the body’s natural equilibrium and balance and when people are relaxed, it is much easier to cope with the everyday stresses and strains that life throws at us. The award winning Complementary Therapies Team at Velindre Cancer Centre is made up of qualified and experienced professionals with many years of experience in this field. They operate alongside conventional health care, providing holistic support on a physical, mental, emotional and spiritual level for patients.

The team works collaboratively across all departments involved in patient care as part of an integrated health plan.  As well as providing inpatient care on all wards, the Complementary Therapies team has also expanded their services to offer outreach clinics in the community, for continuing patient care. The team is involved during medical procedures, for example paracentesis and chest aspiration. The therapists attend Physiotherapy and Lymphoedema clinics, and are involved in Chemotherapy and Radiotherapy sessions. Complementary Therapies have many positive benefits; it can help to reduce the distress of symptoms and side-effects associated with cancer and its treatments.

It can boost the immune system, help eliminate toxins, help relieve pain, improve circulation, increase energy levels, induce deep relaxation, reduce stress and tension, improve sleep patterns, and restore balance to body systems. The team provides a range of treatments including: Reflexology, Aromatherapy, Therapeutic Massage, Reiki / Healing, Breathing and Visualisation techniques.
