JOGLE4Cancer raise in excess of £34,000!
A team of 5 fundraisers have cycled the entire length of Britain, from John O'Groats in the North all the way to Land's End in the South, to raise funds for Velindre Cancer Centre.
"We tried to think of a challenge that was worthy of a large fund raising attempt so we chose to cycle from John O'Groats to Land's End in 10 days. We know this won't be easy, but no matter how difficult and gruelling the ride becomes it will never be as painful as it is for those fighting the indiscriminate disease that is cancer." - David Frost.
The challenge, of epic proportions, took 10 days to complete with the cyclists having a support team with them the whole way. Battling the best (worst) of the British weather they faced storms, gale force winds and even a brief visit to A&E for one of the team. Luckily it was superficial damage and all 5 cyclists completed the entire 900 mile route relatively unscathed!
The team, from Colwinston in the Vale of Glamorgan, explained why they chose to support Velindre with a whole range of fundraising events leading up to the JOGLE bike ride.
"During the last year we have all been affected by cancer, some losing close family and some losing close friends. Many of us have taken loved ones for treatment at Velindre Cancer Hospital and have seen at first hand the exceptional work carried out there. Velindre is an incredibly important resource that we all appreciate so we decided to try and raise as much money as possible to help fund the fantastic work that is performed there by the doctors and staff."
Finally rolling in to their much loved home village they were welcomed by bright sunshine, colourful bunting, Welsh flags, Velindre balloons and a huge welcome party of friends and family! The Sycamore Inn, which was considered very much the headquarters of the operation, was decorated in Velindre green and looked glorious for the returning heroes. We learned that whilst the challenge was taking place, regular customers of the Sycamore Tree were also replicating the mileage on static exercise bikes in the bar area, totaling their own incredible feat of over 1000 miles combined!
The challenge grabbed the attention of the local media as they traveled the length of the country, and the team were even interviewed live by BBC Radio Bristol! Fantastic coverage for Velindre Fundraising and awareness of these supporters wonderful effort!
They took immense joy in announcing to the welcoming party, that with all the funds from the events in the build up and the cycle itself they have raised an absolutely phenomenal £34,000!
Velindre Cancer Centre is Wales' premier provider of chemotherapy and radiotherapy, along with other specialist services and staff thanks to the incredible support of our fundraisers! Thank you JOGLE4Cancer!
