Fundraising Tips & Advice
Whilst we hope you’ll have loads of fun fundraising for Velindre Cancer Centre, please take a few minutes to read the advice below to make sure that you and everybody involved with your event/activity are acting within the law and are kept safe.
Safety
In the interests of safety, please consider whether you need first aid or fire safety precautions and ensure that no-one is fundraising, working or spectating in an unsafe environment. Ensure that children are supervised and don’t let them collect money from strangers. Children under the age of 16 must provide written consent of a parent or guardian before taking part in any physically event or one which carries an obvious risk of injury. Be extra careful if you’re carrying money around; it’s safest to send us any money you raise straight away, but please don’t send us cash in the post as it may get lost.
Insurance
Unfortunately, Velindre cannot accept any liability for the event you organise. If you need insurance to cover any public liability risks you will need to take it out yourself. Remember to check with the owners of your venue, as it may be covered already.
Licences
Some events which involve music, food and alcohol may require a licence. A licence is needed to sell alcohol at an event unless the venue already has a licence. To obtain a temporary licence contact the Licencing Department at your local council or Magistrates Court at least one month before the event.
Public Collections
If you plan on holding a collection in a public venue such as a street, park or house-to-house, you will need to obtain a collectors licence from your local authority. Please apply as early as possible as it may take some time for your application to be processed. However, if you collect on private property such as in a supermarket or a pub, you don’t need a licence –you will just need to get permission from the manager/owner. All collectors must be aged 16 or over and please ensure you always use an official collecting tin or bucket, which you can get by completing and return an ‘Event Registration Form’ or contacting the Fundraising Department.

Raffles & Lotteries
Raffle’s and lotteries are a great way to fundraise and bring in extra money at events, but there are laws surrounding them so before you start, there are some things you need to consider. Please see the 'Raffle & Lottery Guidelines' for details. These include bingo, whist drives, bridge events etc.
