Nursing and Therapy Services

Therapy Services comprise the professions of Dietetics, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Speech & Language Therapy, Lymphoedema and Complementary Therapies. 

Each profession is also assisted by clinical support workers.  All are experienced Allied Health Professional’s with many years experience in both the NHS and cancer care, making the department rich in clinical expertise. 

All therapies provide individualised assessment, intervention and care and use evidence based practice.

The Therapists work as part of a multi-disciplinary team who provide an essential service in order to promote rehabilitation and enhance the patient’s quality of life.

Therapy Services have a dedicated area within ISCO which can be accessed by professional colleagues, where details of the assessment and intervention will be found. 

Dietetics

Dietetics provides services to in-patients, out-patients and radiotherapy with priority being given to head and neck and upper GI cancers. 

Nutrition screening is undertaken for all patients on admission and referrals are made to the dietitian for those patients identified being malnourished or at risk of malnutrition.

Following a detailed assessment by the dietitian individualised and specialised  nutritional intervention is provided to patients. ie: oral, enteral or parenteral.

Occupational Therapy

 

At present, Occupational Therapy provides a service for in-patients only. 
Screening is undertaken by the OT assistant to prioritise referrals.  The OT will provide assessments and recommend equipment for safe discharge and independent living.  They also provide relaxation classes and advise on fatigue management.

 

 

Physiotherapy
The Physiotherapy department covers the in-patient beds and provides an out patient service to head and neck and post breast surgery patients.

The Physiotherapists provides assessments and treatment interventions of mobility, gait re-education, respiratory care, neurological rehabilitation, lymphoedema, moving and handling.

 

Speech and Language Therapy
Speech and Language Therapy provides a service for inpatients, dealing with swallowing assessments, tracheostomy care and communication problems.

 

Complementary Therapies
Complementary Therapies such as aromatherapy, therapeutic massage, reflexology, reiki/healing are used to provide support alongside conventional medicine from diagnosis throughout treatment regimes and in palliative care.

Treatments help to promote relaxation, alleviate anxiety, reduce depression and alleviate symptoms such as breathlessness, constipation, pain, nausea and fatigue.
