Legacies

Donations from Legacies – gifts of money or assets or even personal possessions left in a supporters are a vital source of support for us.

Nearly half the money donated to Velindre Cancer Centre is from Legacies.

These gifts allow us to plan for the future and secure vital services at the Hospital.

Legacies are free of Inheritance Tax and capital Gains Tax. You are never to young or old to make a will. The sooner you do it, the sooner you can be confident that everything is in order.

Making a will ensures that your loved ones and the causes that matter to you are taken care of.

It is simple to change an existing will – if you wanted to add Velindre Cancer Centre to your will, can be done using a codicil. This is a legal amendment which will need to be signed and witnessed just like your will. Your solicitor will help you to do this.

There are a few types of legacy. The most common two are:

A pecuniary legacy
– this is the most straight forward type of legacy where a specific amount is given. For example – “I leave a thousand pounds to Velindre Cancer Centre”.

A residuary legacy - this is where a share of you’re the remainder of your estate is donated after all other cost have been met.

There is also a reversionary legacy. This allows you to leave a gift to a loved one for use during their lifetime, and it can then be passed onto Velindre Cancer centre after this time. This can be a useful way of carrying out responsibility to a supporter’s family, while at the same time ensuring a valuable gift to Velindre Cancer Centre.

A specific bequest. This is when you can leave a specific item, like a piece of jewellery or property, that can either be sold or kept.

I would like to show my appreciation to all of the staff who looked after me and cared for me. Nothing was too much trouble for them and with their love and care made a very difficult stay easier to deal with

Everyone seemed to have the gift of making you feel that you were the only one that mattered even though the Hospital was always full.
