28th - 29th June 2008

Velindre Fundraising’s first ever Excalibur Challenge took place in the scenic hills of Brecon National Park on the weekend of 28th–29th June. 13 teams took part in this challenging even to compete for the grand Excalibur sword and to be crowned winners! We can now confirm the winning team were Team Spartan, with the Kilo Two team as the runners up. We would like to thank Glamorgan County Badminton team and all the teams for their patience and consideration.

The challenge involved potholing, abseiling, gorge walking, scaling waterfalls and jumping in rivers. Set over two days the teams had to hike 30 miles in an exhilarating combination of skill, wit and strength.

On the Saturday night there was a barbeque, a bar and a bonfire which set spirits alight and got the party going.

The event is on target to raise £10,000 for Velindre Cancer Centre although money is still coming in. The money raised will go towards patient care support and research at Velindre Cancer Centre.

Participant Teresa Booton said: ‘I feel quite privileged to have been involved in the first Excalibur challenge and aim to complete it next year. It’s an opportunity to step out of your comfort zone, learn about personal qualities you never knew you had, meet new friends, and raise money for a worthwhile cause. DO IT!!!’

I would like to show my appreciation to all of the staff who looked after me and cared for me. Nothing was too much trouble for them and with their love and care made a very difficult stay easier to deal with

Everyone seemed to have the gift of making you feel that you were the only one that mattered even though the Hospital was always full.
