Active Support Unit
The Active Support Unit is now open to 17 high dependency patients after our most recent appeal which raised £ 1.4 million.
The new development provides a high quality unit with state of the art facilities. This will ensure that Welsh cancer patients receive the level of support they need, with dignity and privacy. The new ASU will also help to provide the essential day to day care so important for patient morale. Its facilities include comfort cooling, individual televisions in each cubicle and ward area as well as internet access and well equipped day rooms. There is a conservatory with a patio outside where patients can be wheeled outside to enjoy the outdoors from the comfort of their bed. The ward contains a sleeping room and kitchen for relatives and is mostly comprised of individual rooms for patients with some four bed bays. Patient care is kept personal in a more homely environment.
Andrea Hague, the Director of Velindre Cancer Centre said about the new facility “The extended and refurbished Active Support Unit provides a much improved facility for patients and their families as well an improved working environment for staff”.
